You’re never too old or too young to have fun at the beach or on a river or lake. That’s why water sports are great leisure activities for families. Whether it’s swimming, fishing, paddling, or splashing, water sports offer affordable outdoor fun for everyone.

Rent Water Equipment

Chances are, there’s a body of water not too far from your home where you can introduce your kids to water sports. If you’re not sure what activity to try first, consider renting equipment for a day. Boat rentals are available at many beaches and large lakes. Take along a few fishing poles and bring a picnic lunch.

Kayaks and canoes can also be rented and may be a good choice for rivers, streams, and estuaries. These small crafts allow you an up-close view of your natural surroundings, and paddling isexcellent exercise for the entire body. Depending on your age and skill level, you may also try renting paddle boats, paddle boards, and windsurfing.

Watch Your Kids

Whatever water sport you decide on, it will likely involve swimming, whether for fun or necessity. Even young children love to splash around, but consider enrolling them in swimming lessons first. Swimming is alife-saving skill that every child should learn. Even when you don’t plan on swimming—say, you’re fishing off a dock or canoeing in a river—accidents can happen in the blink of an eye. When on or near the water, at least one adult should be watching children at all times. Swimming lessons can give kids the skills to cope, but a watchful eye is still necessary.
